This week the jury reached a verdict in the trial of former officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd. As educators, we are committed to providing safe spaces and age-appropriate resources for students to process, learn, and engage in important conversations about current events and the world around them.

We invite you to join us and support conversations about racism and violence at home. While talking points and online resources may not help answer all the hard questions, they provide a place to start. Below are some resources you may find helpful.

  • Read Aloud. Click HERE for a read-aloud of Something Happened in Our Town, the picture book we read with students and families at Race and Equity Team family event last February.
  • Additional Resources. Click HERE for a google doc of anti-racism resources ranging from books and articles to podcasts and films and HERE for resources from SEA Center for Racial Equity to help when talking to kids about race and racism.

School and Classroom Planning for Next Year (K – 4th grade families only)

As we plan for next year, it’s helpful for us to know if you plan to return to Lawton. Having a good idea of our enrollment numbers helps us when building classes and assigning staff to grade levels. Please complete THIS ONLINE FORM by May 1st.

There are two parts to the form:

  • Part 1 (Required): Let us know if you are returning to Lawton next year.
  • Part 2 (Optional): Provide feedback on your student’s strengths, challenges, and learning style. We consider many factors when building balanced classrooms. While we do not take teacher requests, we value your expertise about your student. Great care and consideration is given to each child’s placement, whether you submit input or not. However, the information you provide helps us build balanced classrooms that maximize learning and success for all students.

Dressing for Spring Weather

Seattle weather is unpredictable this time of year. It can be sunny when you leave home and raining by the time you arrive at school. We want to get students outdoors for fresh air and an opportunity for active play every day. Please make sure your student comes to school with clothes that will allow them to play comfortably outside in rain for a 20-minute recess.

PTA Sponsored “School Photo” Days (5/2 & 5/16)

The Lawton PTA would like to thank Lydia Brewer Photography for reserving two days for “school portraits” of Lawton Elementary students. The cost is $27.52 ($25 plus tax) per 5 minute session and includes the cost of the digital download. Click here to learn more and sign up for a spot.

Grab & Go Breakfasts and Lunches

SPS is providing free shelf-stable breakfasts and lunches to students who need them for the remainder of the year. Students may not eat on campus but can pick up a meal to take home (e.g. take a grab-and-go breakfast on Monday to eat before you come to school on Tuesday). Click HERE to request breakfast and/or lunch for your student.
