Lawton Families –

I hope everyone had a relaxing Winter Break and happy 2024 to our Lawton community! We had a great first week of the new year last week, with our students happy to see friends and classmates after the break, our classes focused on new units of study, and our Newspaper Club publishing their first paper of the year!

PE, Music and Assemblies

I’m excited to see that in PE, Mr. Peters is adding Archery for 4th and 5th grades this year – those classes will be focused on that unit this month. PE classes will also be doing bicycle and/or roller blading units in the new year, so there is lots of fun for all grades to come!

In Music, Ms. Kinder is doing an amazing job developing a highly engaging music program for our students, and students sing, play instruments, do movement, and learn music theory each music class. Many of you know Ms. Kinder was previously a classroom teacher at Lawton, and this year she has transitioned to teaching Music, so we decided that this year we will pause music performances for families so she can establish her program. As we are approaching the mid-year mark, I’d like to share a message and survey from Ms. Kinder with you that will help inform her instruction and program:

“Hello Families,

As we dive into 2024, I’m eager to learn about your family’s musical tastes and talents. This brief survey is your chance to share what music means to you and how it plays a part in your home. Your insights will help shape a music class that reflects and celebrates the diverse musical backgrounds of our students. Whether it’s a genre you love, an instrument you play, or a cultural music tradition you hold dear, your input is invaluable.

I’m also curious to know if any of you are interested in sharing your musical talents with our class.
Your participation will make a real difference in how we experience and enjoy music together.

Thank you for helping make our music class a richer, more inclusive place!

Ms. Kinder”

In recent years, Lawton had only 2-3 all school assemblies each year; you may have noticed these listed on the school calendar that came home in the first day packet. As the new school year commenced, our staff wanted to experiment with a weekly assembly on Wednesday mornings that focuses on building our school culture and climate, and it has become a successful way for our whole school to connect. We honor our weekly WAVE winners at the assemblies, and try to have different staff and/or students lead a short content section, which lets our assemblies be very responsive to the needs of the school community. As a result of this change in our schedule, we did move our Veteran’s Day assembly in the fall from the published Thursday date to the Wednesday prior, and we will likewise move our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day assembly (led by the Lawton Student Union) to 1/10/24. Families are welcome to join assemblies, but please be mindful that space is limited in our cafeteria when all of our classes are present.

Used Sneaker Drive Winners!

Thank you to all who participated in our used athletic shoe drive. Ms. Soccorsy’s class came in first place with 114 shoes, and Ms. Wong’s class came in second place with 84 shoes! Way to go third grade!

Thank you to all who participated in our used athletic shoe drive. Our goal was to collect 1,000 sneakers, and we are well on our way with 438 shoes. We will keep the blue bin in front of the school for continued sneaker donations. Let’s work together to get to 1,000!

Thank you for helping us reuse and recycle our old kicks while helping our planet stay greener!
