Call to action from Seattle Council PTSA

If not addressed by the legislature in Olympia, Seattle’s school funding from the state will be radically different next year due to enrollment declines during COVID-19. Urgent action by our lawmakers is needed to preserve teacher positions, transportation, and the overall capacity to resume a more normal educational experience when the time comes.

Contact your Legislators and ask for funding to address enrollment stabilization in the budget.   You can call the Legislative Hotline: 1.800.562.6000 and leave a message for your Legislators.  You can do this in your preferred language and your message will be translated for your Legislators.   You can also email your Legislators.  Find your Legislators by using the District Finder at  https://app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/

SCPTSA has a slide deck explaining the current budget situation in more detail here.

2021-2022 PTA Budget

This year the PTA Board has aligned their budgeting process to coincide with the Seattle Public Schools budget timeline. Please join us on March 1st from 6-6:30pm for a presentation (Zoom link) of the proposed budget for 2021-2022 and discussion led by the PTA President and Treasurer.

As a reminder, the expense categories are school grants (librarian, counselor, hourly recess/lunch supervisors, tech site licenses, and teacher stipends), enrichment (visiting authors, performing artists, STEAM week, etc.), community events (staff appreciation, Field Day, Back to School Bash, Fall Family Dance, Bingo Night, and other socials), operations (insurances, software subscriptions, printing fees, supplies), and community outreach.

The link to the proposed budget presentation can be found here.

If you are unable to attend the scheduled meeting, please send your feedback or questions to treasurer@lawtonelementary.org. The budget will be sent to the PTA membership by email for vote between March 2nd and 8th. Only Lawton PTA members will receive and be able to vote.

Prioritizing Social-Emotional Learning

Nurses, counselors, mental-health, social-emotional health is the top legislative priority for WSPTA in 2021.

A bill in the legislature right now, HB 1444 would provide school counselors at a ratio of 1 per 150 students by fall of 2021, and this bill heads to the Education Committee for public hearing on TUESDAY.  Here is the link for the bill, and the bill status.

We at Lawton fund our counselor through the annual Direct Drive. Legistlative support for this important position would allow for staffing a full-time position, as well as freeing resources for other important priorities.

Legislators can be contacted on this or any other issue via the methods on this page.
