Lawton Families –

Spring has sprung! Hope you are enjoying the gorgeous weather, and there was a wonderful buzz in the air last week at Lawton as we focused on STEAM (and Pi/pie!). We are so grateful for the gracious support of the PTA, parent volunteers and passionate staff to make the events of this week possible, and this week really showcased how powerful the partnership between our school and family community is at Lawton. Our celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and math is a Lawton tradition that helps promote academic enrichment, innovation, and inquiry for students at all grade levels, and we loved seeing the creative cardboard challenge entries, math challenge sheets and focus on learning at a time of year when student skills are really being put into application and action!

And speaking of STEAM…

SPS has put a strategic focus on robotics in K-12 education and is offering a hands-on and engaging way to teach STEM concepts. Thanks to funding from Amazon Future Engineers dedicated to this effort, the Digital Learning team and CTE are looking to bring district-supported after-school robotics programming back to our elementary schools. Check out this flyer for more info about the project and how you can help get it started!

And speaking of our amazing PTA…

General PTA Membership Meeting

A reminder that our General Membership Meeting is taking place on Thursday, 3/21 at 6pm in the Lawton Library. Learn more about our budget plans, hear from our librarian and reading specialist Ms. Gallegos, and stay for our first Lawton Parenting Support Group, run by Kate Kiely, a former Lawton parent. The support group meeting will end at 8pm.

PTA Board Nominating committee

The PTA Board is still looking for PTA members to join this year’s Nominating Committee. If you are interested in joining the committee or have any questions, please email presidents.

PTA Sponsored Visiting Artist

The PTA is excited to bring back our visiting artist program this spring. After focusing on watercolors for the past few years, we decided to introduce a new art technique: Local comic book artist Sarah Romano Diehl will teach our students the basics of comic book drawing before the end of the school year. As a former Lawton parent, she is familiar with the school and, together with students, she created the dolphin murals on our playground several years ago.

Birds & Bees Talk with Amy Lang

The PTAs of Lawton, Blaine and Magnolia Elementary have partnered up to bring you an online talk by award-winning author and speaker Amy Lang on how and when to start the famous birds and bees talk. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 3 from 7-8:30pm and join via Zoom. To learn more about Amy, click here.
