Lawton Families,
We are now two weeks away from Spring Break, and even with the excitement of spring and the coming school break, teachers are really noticing that our students are in their best “learning zone” this time of year. Last week we had a visit from the Superintendent, Dr. Jones, and he got the chance to say hello to 4th graders, see & hear 1st graders prepare for their music concert (and show off our Lawton Dolphin song for him), talk to 5th graders about their math work and about being school leaders, and see 3rd graders creating art with our visiting artist – as well as touring our school and meeting with staff – in all it was a great opportunity to showcase our amazing school!
Career Exploration Night- Volunteers needed!
Come participate in our favorite Lawton show-and-tell… for the grown-ups! On April 29th, Lawton will host its third annual Career Exploration Night. This is an open-house all-school event for families in which parents and family members in our school community have the opportunity to showcase their jobs to our Lawton students. We had a great turnout last year and learned so much about our Lawton families. If you are interested in having a booth/ table at our Career Night this year, we would LOVE to have you- we still need several more volunteers to round out our event! We are looking for a diverse range of jobs from across the career spectrum for our students to learn about. Our students are curious about the world of work and this is a great way for them to learn about real jobs in our community, ask questions and consider their own interests and options. We provide the space, and you come with yourself and any information/props/visuals you might want to share about your job (optional). Please reach out for more info or complete the survey HERE to participate. Thanks!
As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you might have about your child. You can find more information about the Lawton school counseling program on the school website HERE. I look forward to connecting with you! Ms. Barry
Spring Assessments
All grade levels will be doing district and/or state assessments this May, including the DIBELS, MAP and SBA tests. These assessments help staff identify student growth in grade level reading and math skills from this school year.
The SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment) is a state-level test for grades 3-5 only, and per Policy 2080, the Seattle Public School Board recognizes the right of parents/guardians to opt their children out of this assessment should they choose to. In order to opt your student out of SBA tests, you must make a request in writing to me at dsmcardle@seattleschools.org and I will respond with directions and next steps for you to take.
Lost and Found
We are donating Lost and Found the Friday before Spring Break – please check it frequently and label your child’s clothing and food/drink containers!
