Principal Newsletter 3.4.24

Dear Lawton Families,

Last week the Magnolia and Blaine communities were notified that a man in a car had approached students walking on the sidewalk and exposed himself to them. This incident was reported to SPD by parents, but it is now the 2nd time since January that an incident of this nature has happened to SPS students in Magnolia. While I don’t want to upset you, it is important for you to know of these incidents so we can all be mindful about keeping children in Magnolia safe. Remind your student to always be aware of their surroundings and not talk to strangers or go anywhere with them. Lawton Pi/Pie Night – March 14 (3.14) from 5:30 – 6:30 in the Cafeteria

Eat some pie and play math games with your family – and this year we’ll be joined by former Lawton teacher Peter Hubbard, who will bring his fun Tetragami activity! While there is limited capacity for doing Tetragami on Pi/Pie Night (Mr. Hubbard can work with about 30 families who are interested that evening), here is more information about how to get the templates to do it at home: Introduction to Tetragami Creative Design System.pdf

General PTA Membership Meeting

PTA members, mark your calendars: Our General Membership Meeting will take place on Thursday, 3/21 at 6pm in the Lawton Library. We will discuss updates to the current year budget, plans for the 2024/25 budget and give an overview of the process for approving the budget as well as answer any questions you may have. Our wonderful librarian and reading specialist, Ms. Gallegos, will be in attendance to share more about the importance of her work at Lawton.

Parenting Support Group

Following our Membership Meeting, we will be kicking off our first Lawton Parenting Support Group. It will take place on 3/21 at 7pm in the Lawton Library. From facilitator Kate Kiely: "Join us for a monthly parenting support group where you can share your experiences, learn new strategies, and get and give support in a safe space. When we raise kids in the context of community and connection, we learn to be more compassionate to ourselves, supportive of one another, and more present for the kids in our lives. We’ll exchange resources and read and discuss a parenting book together. It’s also a great way to make and strengthen connections within the Lawton community. The group will be hosted by certified coach and facilitator Kate Kiely."

Kate Kiely Bio: Kate is a parent of a Lawton grad and a certified personal development coach and facilitator, specializing in leadership, communication, and change. Kate has a master’s degree in education and has spent many hours in the classroom. She facilitates workshops, leadership circles, and support groups, and volunteers for HCN, the Humanitarian Coaching Network. Kate has a passion for creating community, promoting ongoing learning, and cultivating a growth mindset.

PTA Nominating committee

The PTA Board is looking for three PTA members to join this year’s Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is responsible for seeking the best qualified nominees for next year’s PTA Board and therefore has a significant influence on the future of the PTA. The time commitment is usually low, and meetings can take place online. If you are interested in joining the committee or have any questions, please email presidents.
