Principal Newsletter, 4.29.24

Dear Lawton Families,

I want to start with a big shout out to our amazing School Counselor, Erica Barry, for organizing last week’s fun and well-attended Career Night and Volunteer Appreciation event – and to all the Lawton family members and PTA Board, who gave their time to share details about their careers with our students! On Friday, May 3 our School Spirit theme is College or Career wear!

Also on May 3 – Lost and Found items will be donated on this day, so please give the racks a check this week!

SPS Artificial Intelligence Policies

SPS recently published information about how we use AI, and teach in the new AI reality. This work is new for Lawton staff and students, but thought families might be interested in what to expect: https://www.seattleschools.org/student-portal/technology-supports-for-families/digital-tools/ai-tools/

State Testing Notice – grades 3-5

Spring assessment season is upon us – all grades will do literacy and math testing between now and June, but only grades 3-5 take the WA State SBA exam:

This spring all students in grades 3-5 will take the Smarter Balanced tests in Math and English Language Arts. Students in grade 5 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

The results from these tests are one of many ways of understanding where students are in their learning, relative to grade-level learning goals in Math, English Language Arts, and Science. Students will take the tests online, so we must have all laptops kept at school. Our school is scheduled to take the tests between May 13 – June 7.

For more information about the Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests, visit: https://ospi.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing, and click on the name of the test.

To try out an online Smarter Balanced practice or training test or WCAS training test, visit the Washington Comprehensive Assessment Program (WCAP) Portal: https://wa.portal.cambiumast.com/index.html and click on the Practice and Training Tests button.

Please call or email me if you have questions about state testing or wish to opt your student out of this mandatory testing.
