Principal Newsletter – December 15, 2022

Good morning!

A friendly reminder that today is a one-hour early release – students dismissed at 1:25pm.

We wish you and yours a safe and joyful Winter Break – with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the people you love. We will look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday, January 3rd.

Covid Tests Available at Pick Up Today

Reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 over break by testing if you feel sick, testing before attending large gatherings, and testing after any exposure. We will put a supply of rapid antigen tests on top of the lost and found rack in front of the building for those wanting to take a box home for break.

3rd – 5th Grade Bike Unit Starts January 5th

The Lawton PE bike and pedestrian safety unit for grades 3-5 will begin after winter break and run for most of January (January 5-25). This unit assumes most students know how to ride a bike but teaches learn-to-ride skills to students who need them. To prepare for this unit, please:

  • Read letter from Cascade Bicycle Club
  • Bring your helmet to school if you have one (properly fitted and marked with your name) but leave your bike at home
  • Dress for the weather (e.g., gloves, clothes that can get wet and dirty) so that we can ride outside on the upper field

Lawton’s Snow Day Plan

When weather requires a change to school as usual, SPS will either:

  • Delay the in-person school day by two hours; or
  • Close schools and pivot to remote learning.

Seattle Public Schools will monitor weather starting 48 hours before projected snow:

  • Ready (48 hours before) – Watching weather and preparing if snow looks likely
  • Set (24 hours before) – Teachers prep for remote learning/students take devices home
  • Go (by 5am on snow days) – SPS decides whether learning will be in person or remote

If we pivot to remote learning, you will get an email from us to help you through the snow day schedule. Students have been practicing logging in to Teams channels and meetings with their teachers, but we will also provide links and reminders the day-of for families to access from any device.

On the first day of remote instruction, there will be a two-hour delayed start. If there are consecutive days of remote learning, those will begin at our standard start time.

For those who like to picture how snow days will work, we’re including a draft schedule below. For those who don’t want to deal with it until it happens, skip this. We’ll send it again when you need it – complete with all the links to join meetings.
