Principal Newsletter – May 27, 2022

I know we have heavy hearts after this week’s news of another school shooting. Schools should be a place for students to experience safety and joy while they focus on growing and learning. Having that expectation violated causes fear and anxiety.

Our children see and hear so much, but sometimes don’t know how to interpret what they are seeing. In the aftermath of tragic events, it is important to listen when they have questions and support them to process their feelings. This looks different depending on the students and their ages, but it is important for children to have space to ask questions and process what they are seeing and hearing.

Below are some resources gathered by SPS to support you as you talk about these sensitive topics at home:

Lawton staff continue to put safety first for our students and community. Our staff and students practice responding to different emergency situations and our Building Safety Team meets regularly to review, monitor, and adjust health and safety protocols.

Staffing Updates

As we approach the end of the school year, we want to acknowledge that June marks more than just the end of another school year for Emmy Misner. She’s long harbored a dream of being a librarian and has accepted a Librarian position at Viewlands. While Viewlands is lucky to have her and we’re thrilled she’s getting this chance to pursue her passion, she will be deeply missed at Lawton.

We’ve hired three new teachers:

• Courtney French (5th grade)

• Carolyn Foster (4th grade)

• Erica Collis (part-time PE)

While things may change between now and September but here are our expected grade level configurations and teacher assignments based on what we know about enrollment and staffing at this time:

• 3 Kindergarten: Lundgren, McDonagh, Thompson

• 3 First Grade: Conner, Kinder, Matzner

• 3 Second Grade: Bakker, Noel, Wyman

• 3 Third Grade: Hafzalla, Soccorsy, Wong

• 2 Fourth Grade: Foster, Leache

• 2 Fifth Grade: French, Swartzman

Race & Ethnicity Enrollment Update

Race & Ethnicity Enrollment Update Form. The form will close at noon on June 9th.
