Principal Newsletter – October 15, 2021

One of the joys of coming back to school is in person music and PE. Ms. Cooper and Mr. Peters are curating engaging and safe learning experiences that maximize learning new skills while adhering to our health and safety protocols. Ask your student about what they learned this week!

Family Night October 19th – Focus on Positive Communication

Parent: How was your day?

Student: Fine.

Sound familiar? Want more? Join Erica Barry, school counselor, on Tuesday, October 19th at 7pm for a family night focused on positive communication. Ms. Barry will share five tips for effective conversations with your student(s). The PTA will also do a brief overview of how they support Lawton and what you can do to help.

The link was sent in the email version of the Principal Newsletter.

No Bus Service Starting Next Week

Beginning on Monday, October 18, Lawton will no longer have any bus service to or from school. Bus riders should be receiving information about this change directly from the Transportation Department. We understand this is a large burden on families. The front office will provide a list of contact information for bus riders who granted directory permissions on their FERPA forms to help families organize carpools. If your student has no way to get to school without a bus, please email Lawton.

Time to Sign Up for (Virtual) Conferences

Conferences are an excellent opportunity to learn about your student’s progress thus far in the school year and the goals that they are working towards. Conferences allow us to celebrate all the ways students have already grown as well as all the ways they will continue to grow throughout the remainder of the year.

Conferences will be held:

  • Thursday, November 18th (3-6pm)
  • Monday, November 22nd (7:30am – 6pm)
  • Tuesday, November 23rd (7:30am – 4:30pm)

All conference will be virtual this year. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up or complete your survey as soon as possible.

Lunch Updates

Milk with lunch orders only. The Culinary Services department let our lunchroom manager know that milk can now only be offered with school lunch (vs. a la carte like we’d been offering it in the past). If your student isn’t ordering school lunch, please send them with a water bottle or something to drink in their lunchbox.

Indoor/Outdoor Lunch. The weather is turning colder and we’re moving to indoor lunch. Our supervision staff reported students were uncomfortably cold during outdoor lunch and were rushing through their meals to get moving/stay warm – which led to hungry students in the afternoon. Our indoor lunch setup in the gym and cafeteria meets all SPS health and social distancing guidelines. There are filters in both places. We will continue to offer outdoor lunch when it is truly warm and dry but are staying mindful of the impact cold temperatures have on eating habits.

Health and Safety

Please send extra masks each day. We´re having a lot of requests for replacement masks during the school day. If you´re able to send your student with extra masks each day, that is really helpful.

New Covid Flow Chart and No Home Tests. Guidance has changed (again). Starting Monday, only PCR Covid-19 tests (no rapid or home antigen test) will be accepted. If your student has Covid-19 symptoms, please keep them home and follow this flow chart for next steps and safe return to school.

School Covid-19 testing is available in a limited capacity. We recommend outside testing centers that are more equipped for faster turnaround times and less school days missed.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping the Lawton community safe and healthy and your continued flexibility as we get more updates and changes from the Department of Health.

Lawton Covid Update. This week (10/11– 10/15), Lawton sent two classroom COVID notifications.
