Principal Newsletter – October 21, 2022

What comes to mind for you when you think of “kids these days”? For us, it’s remarkable flexibility and curiosity. This group of students has had so much practice adapting to change and adjusting to deal with new conditions. Their flexibility in the face of changes to routines continues to impress me. Their curiosity was evident this week during our first ever Career Exploration Night. Thank you to the Lawton community members who brought their expertise and enthusiasm to our students. Students were excited to share with one another what they thought was interesting and what they learned.

This week saw air quality conditions that required changes in school routines and two surprise (to students) emergency drills. It was our annual fire drill practice with the Seattle Fire Department; we earned rave reviews for the speed and orderliness of our exit and for our thorough and effective procedures for making sure all students are accounted for in emergencies. We also participated in the Great American Shake Out on Thursday, October 20th. Through it all, Lawton students joined the WAVE by acting responsibly and encouraging each other.

Seeking Scouts, Veterans, and Photos for Assembly on November 10th

If you are a scout leader or veteran interested in participating in our assembly on Thursday, November 10th, please contact Aaron Swartzman at ayswartzman. If you have a picture of a veteran in your family that you want celebrated at this event, please email the picture with the Veteran’s name, relationship to student, and how they served to mbmichalsen.

School Picture Delay

School photos took longer at the lab than expected. We’re hoping to have them to students by Friday, October 28th. In the event your student isn’t as adorable as you know they truly are, picture retakes will occur on Tuesday, November 8th.

Costume Reminders

Reminder that school costumes should follow these guidelines:

  • No masks, face paint, or accessories/weapons
  • Practical footwear
  • Avoid cultural appropriation
  • Costumes should be packed, not worn to school
