Lawton students and staff participated in the Great American ShakeOut Drill on Thursday. Everyone did a great job when asked to drop, cover, and hold. Ask your student to show you how – and you can practice at home!
Counselor Corner
Every six weeks, our counselor Erica Barry rotates through all Lawton classrooms to do a social emotional learning lesson. Read below to learn more about lessons by grade level for the latest cycle:
- K: Mood Meter – We learned about the Mood Meter and all the different big emotions we can feel. We played “guess the feeling” based on facial cues and learned strategies for how to guess what people are feeling even when they have masks on!
- 1: Meta-Moment – We learned how to take a Meta-Moment, manage big feelings, and calm down. We talked about what it means to be our “best self” and read the book Big Bear Hug to illustrate how we can solve problems using our strengths.
- 2/3: Kindness – We talked about what it means to be kind, what kindness looks like, and how it feels when others are kind to us. We read the book Be Kind and talked about how acts of kindness can spread around the world. Students are working over the next weeks to complete Kindness Bingo cards to spread kindness in our school community.
- 4/5: Friendship – We learned about and discussed healthy and unhealthy friendship behaviors, what it means to be a good friend and how friends should make you feel. We discussed “warning signs” that might indicate unhealthy friendships and how to manage relationships that make us feel uneasy or unsafe.
Ask your students about their lessons and how they are practicing the new things they learned.
