Principal’s Newsletter – 3/19/2021

From: Allison Deno

Last week, Governor Inslee signed an emergency proclamation intending to ensure all students across the state have the option of some in-person learning. This week, the District and Seattle Education Association (SEA) reached a Tentative Agreement, setting in motion plans to offer an in-person hybrid learning model starting Monday, April 5th. We recognize this creates a range of emotions among families and staff.

Lawton is beginning to plan based on what we see in the Tentative Agreement, recognizing that both SEA and the School Board must ratify the agreement before it’s final.

This is a fast timeline with a lot of moving parts and communication pieces coming at families. I want to share the below information so that you can have conversations within your family about what the best next move is for your student(s).  Regardless of what learning model you choose, please rest assured that Lawton remains committed to ensuring every student is provide with high quality educational opportunities.

Given all that will be happening between now and April 5th we will be sending more frequent principal communications. The District is also putting out regular communications with lots of information. We encourage you to read the most recent School Beat that you received in your email.

Things to Do

REQUIRED: District Survey. Families will receive an email from Seattle Public Schools with the Spring 2020-21 Return to In-Person Learning Survey. Please complete the survey to share your preferences. Families who do not complete the survey will continue with remote learning.

OPTIONALInformation Sessions. Attend a question and answer session on Monday, March 22nd to ask questions you might have prior to selecting the hybrid or remote model for your student(s). You are encouraged to carefully review all information provided by Seattle Public Schools within the survey prior to these sessions.

Things to Know

Hybrid vs. Remote. You’ll be given the choice between a hybrid learning model and remote model. The hybrid model means your student will be on campus for in-person learning a half day (either 8:30 – 11:15amor 12:15 – 3pm) four days a week. The other half of the day will combine remote synchronous and asynchronous learning. Please note: At this time, transportation will be provided only for students who have transportation included in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) and students enrolled in Head Start.

The fully remote model will essentially be what we’ve been doing – with possible schedule tweaks in meeting times. Regardless of the model you choose, all students will participate in remote learning on Wednesdays.

Will I keep my teacher? We are prioritizing keeping students with their teacher where possible, but please know there is no guarantee. Any changes in student assignment depend on the number of students interested in the hybrid vs. remote option, the number of staff needing remote work accommodations, and room capacities to maintain social distancing. We value the relationships students have built with their teachers and each other and will be working hard to minimize changes for students.

Schedule During Transition. To give teachers time for required training, planning, and classroom set up, all SPS students will have asynchronous learning (no live meetings) Monday, March 29th – Wednesday, March 31st. The regular remote learning schedule will resume for Thursday, April 1st and Friday, April 2nd. New hybrid and remote schedules will begin on Monday, April 5th.
