This week had a lot of great community building opportunities at Lawton! We filled a FedEx delivery van with sneakers collected by our 4th grade students (more than 1,000 shoes!). This effort was such a success that we will continue to collect used sneakers in the front lobby for the rest of the year. Students loved visiting the Book Fair and listening to a story from our 4th and 5th grade Library Leaders. It was also great to have so many families in the building for Bingo Night! This week has been a busy one at Lawton, with the bike unit for 3rd – 5th grades in full swing, enrichment programs starting after school, and classrooms spending time learning about the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King’s leadership both in the 1950’s-60’s and in our lives today. Today’s school assembly was a student-led celebration of this learning and launched us into the long weekend with a sense of purpose and excitement. School Budget Survey This is the time of year we start budget planning for the next school year. An important part of that process is gathering staff and community input. Upcoming Lawton Tours for Incoming Kindergartners
Lawton has in-person tours for incoming kindergartners/new families for the 2023-24 school year coming up. Lawton Tour Dates: • Tuesday, January 31st at 5:30 pm Thursday, February 2 at 9am No need to register. Just arrive at school 5-10 minutes before the tour and we’ll help you get where you need to go. It was wonderful to welcome students back to school on Tuesday. We also welcomed our salmon eggs to the tank this week where we will get to watch them grow and change. We hope 2023 is off to a great start for your family and will be filled with curiosity, learning, and joy. We have exciting things happening at Lawton in January: 3rd – 5th Grade Bike Unit. Good morning! A friendly reminder that today is a one-hour early release – students dismissed at 1:25pm. We wish you and yours a safe and joyful Winter Break – with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the people you love. We will look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday, January 3rd. Covid Tests Available at Pick Up Today Reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 over break by testing if you feel sick, testing before attending large gatherings, and testing after any exposure. 3rd – 5th Grade Bike Unit – January 5th
The 3rd – 5th Grade Bike Unit Starts January 5th The Lawton PE bike and pedestrian safety unit for grades 3-5 will begin after winter break and run for most of January (January 5-25). This unit assumes most students know how to ride a bike but teaches learn-to-ride skills to students who need them. To prepare for this unit, please: Read letter from Cascade Bicycle Club Bring your helmet to school if you have one (properly fitted and marked with your name) but leave your bike at home Dress for the weather (e.g., gloves, clothes that can get wet and dirty) so that we can ride outside on the upper field
Coming Soon: Registration for Winter After-School Enrichment (ASE) Program
Registration for Winter After-School Enrichment (ASE) Program Starts Soon! The Lawton PTA is continuing to partner with 6Crickets to bring students a variety of classes. Registration opens Wednesday, December 14th at 10am. The Winter session runs Monday, January 9th through Friday, April 7th. Check out the Lawton ASE portal to see the schedule, class descriptions, and fees. Spaces are limited and will be available first come, first serve. Contact afterschoolprograms@lawtonelementary.org with questions. Scholarships are available for families in need. Send scholarship requests to kmcerise@seattleschools.org (be sure to include your first and second choice clubs).
