PTA Budget Update

The results are in. The proposed PTA Budget for the 2021-2022 school year was approved with 90% of votes in favor. ·      55% voted to approve budget as presented ·      35% voted to approve and would like an increase in Community Outreach ·      10% did not approve the budget, but would do so without Community Outreach Thank you to the 33 families who completed the ballot and all our PTA members for showing your support of Lawton PTA and our teachers. We also want to remind our community of our continuing efforts to fundraise for THIS year. We still need to raise approximately $50,000 to fund our librarian and counselor and fulfill other commitments we’ve made to Lawton teachers and programs. We plan to raise these funds through the spring Move-A-Thon (1st week of May) and passive fundraising events

Call to action from Seattle Council PTSA

If not addressed by the legislature in Olympia, Seattle's school funding from the state will be radically different next year due to enrollment declines during COVID-19. Urgent action by our lawmakers is needed to preserve teacher positions, transportation, and the overall capacity to resume a more normal educational experience when the time comes. Contact your Legislators and ask for funding to address enrollment stabilization in the budget.   You can call the Legislative Hotline: 1.800.562.6000 and leave a message for your Legislators.  You can do this in your preferred language and your message will be translated for your Legislators.   You can also email your Legislators.  Find your Legislators by using the District Finder at  https://app.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/ SCPTSA has a slide deck explaining the current budget situation in more detail here.

Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day! We hope next week’s mid-winter break gives you quality time with the ones you love. We look forward to seeing students back in class on Monday, February 22nd.  February is an in-between time in each school year – celebrating the solid relationships between students and teachers and evidence of learning and growth while we make plans for the year to come. Last week we hosted tours for families planning to join the Lawton community in the fall and we are now in the midst of our budget and planning cycle for next year. Principal Newsletter – February 5 2021

This week is National School Counseling Week. Our school counselor, Erica Barry, provides a wide range of supports at Lawton. She serves as a liaison for families in need, provides social emotional learning instruction in our classrooms, hosts lunch bunch and social friendship groups, and meets individually with students. Her work is a key component to Lawton’s systems of support for students and families. We are so appreciative of Ms. Barry’s support for our Lawton Dolphins and the Lawton PTA’s financial support of this position.  Packet and Library Book Pick Up Today for ALL GRADES Library books and paper packets are outside today from 8am to 3pm. Students who redeemed tickets at the WAVE store will find their prizes in their packets and upper grades will find their Valentines inside. Enjoy! Dolphin Race and Equity

Prioritizing Social-Emotional Learning

Nurses, counselors, mental-health, social-emotional health is the top legislative priority for WSPTA in 2021. A bill in the legislature right now, HB 1444 would provide school counselors at a ratio of 1 per 150 students by fall of 2021, and this bill heads to the Education Committee for public hearing on TUESDAY.  Here is the link for the bill, and the bill status. We at Lawton fund our counselor through the annual Direct Drive. Legistlative support for this important position would allow for staffing a full-time position, as well as freeing resources for other important priorities. Legislators can be contacted on this or any other issue via the methods on this page.
