Author Visit
On Friday, May 23, authors Kelly McWilliams and Jewell Parker Rhodes visited Lawton and spoke to all classes about their many books. In addition to being renowned for their writing and scholarship, the authors are mother and daughter, and are the family of a Lawton student, making this visit even more special! Students in K-3 had the book Soul Step (co-written by the authors) read aloud by Jewell Parker Rhodes, and the students in grades 2-5 engaged with the authors about writing historical fiction. We had a really great Family Career Night this week, and I want to thank Ms. Barry for organizing it, and especially thank all of the amazing Lawton families who participated!
Returning to Lawton Survey
Now that it is May, we are starting to plan for next school year already!
We have an electronic Returning to Lawton Next Year? survey that we need all families to complete for each of your Lawton students by May 9. This replaces the paper survey we have sent home in past years, and this data helps us plan classrooms for next year.

Move-a-thon: May 16, 2025
Our 2025 Spring PTA Move-a-Thon Fundraiser is on NOW! Our goal is to raise $35,000 to cover the remainder of our annual PTA budget.
When: Wed, Apr 30 – Fri, May 16
Where: Lawton Elementary School
On Friday May 16, our Dolphins will run, walk, skip, jump, or dance for 30 minutes to raise money for our school. Register your student(s) before the Move-a-Thon and spread their donation link far and wide! Donors can donate per lap or can donate a set amount.
This event is one of the most fun of the year, and we can’t do it without you! Sign up to volunteer.

Lawton Families,
We are now two weeks away from Spring Break, and even with the excitement of spring and the coming school break, teachers are really noticing that our students are in their best “learning zone” this time of year. Last week we had a visit from the Superintendent, Dr. Jones, and he got the chance to say hello to 4th graders, see & hear 1st graders prepare for their music concert (and show off our Lawton Dolphin song for him), talk to 5th graders about their math work and about being school leaders, and see 3rd graders creating art with our visiting artist – as well as touring our school and meeting with staff – in all it was a great

Save the date for our next PTA fundraiser and all around fun day for students – the Move-A-Thon is on Friday, May 16th! More details about participation and fundraising are coming soon, but in short, students walk/run/skip/jump – any sort of movement! – around the upper ball field at Lawton during the school day to raise funds for the PTA (funds for classroom size reduction, reading specialist, playground monitors, STEAM week and science exhibit, etc).
New this year, we are offering Lawton branded t-shirts that kids can wear for both Move-A-Thon and Field Day (Friday, June 13th). Order by Monday, April 7th to receive your shirt on time for Move-A-Thon and be a part of the Lawton rainbow!

Lawton Families,
This week we welcome the start of spring on Thursday, and Trimester 2 of the school year will end on Wednesday. Teachers will then enter data into the Elementary Progress Report on the Source and families will be able to see the progress reports on the Source on or before Spring Break.
We Love Our Lawton PTA!
Last week we had our annual celebration of “Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math” (STEAM) and it was both an exciting and an enlightening week of learning at Lawton. I loved seeing students sharing their creative cardboard challenge items with their peers, as well as playing fun math games, combining geometry and art, and learning about Space with the Pacific
After School Enrichment
It’s time to sign up for the spring session of our after school enrichment program! The spring session will run from March 31st until June 13th, 2025. Registration is open now and several classes still have availability. Registration closes on Thursday, March 20th at 11:59pm.

Lawton Students Speak Up! 🗣️ After rumors circulated in our 4th and 5th grade classrooms that there would be no Halloween celebrations at Lawton this year (since Halloween is on a Saturday), our impassioned students wrote a letter to Ms Clagg, the staff, and our PTA. Ms Clagg’s response: “When I received this letter, I beamed with pride. As a former high school Social Studies teacher, this kind of civic action on the part of 10 and 11 year olds embodies my core values as an educator: to develop thoughtful, well-rounded citizens who engage in productive discourse and positively contribute
