Save the Date: Back to School Bash!

Mark your calendars to join us for our annual Back to School Bash on Friday, September 29, from 5-7pm.

All are welcome as we host our Lawton Elementary community on our playground for fun activities and food for purchase. This is a fun event and a great way to meet and connect.

If you’d like to help with this event, please check out our VOLUNTEER SIGNUPS.

Lawton School Traffic Safety

SCHOOL DROPOFF & PICKUP

Please help keep students and families safe during drop off and pick up. Drivers using 27th Street (along the front of the school) as their drop off area should:

  • Wait in a single-file line once entering 27thstreet â€“ do not pass cars waiting to unload.
  • Stay in the driver’s seat, do not exit car.

Students arriving by car should:

  • Be packed and ready to exit the car independently
  • Exit car on the sidewalk side of the car in the loading zone (not in the circle)

Other ways Lawton families can contribute to a safer morning drop-off for all:

  • Arrive on campus at 7:40 to reduce the last-minute surge of cars and people
  • Use the morning school bus if your student has a transportation assignment
  • Drive slow and focused
  • Park on neighborhood streets instead of using the dead-end street in front of the school
  • Consider walking or biking to school

Whether dropping off or picking up, do not park in the area around the traffic circle as this prohibits buses from accessing the bus lane in front of the school. This area is clearly marked with no parking signs.

Kindergarten Connections

Please join our incoming PTA Co-Presidents, Birgit Saalfeld and Melanie Nel, as they host a second Kindergarten playdate on Thursday, Aug. 31, 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm at Discovery Park playground.

Any questions can be sent to them via presidents@lawtonelementary.org

Our Kindergarten teachers are hosting this connection session Tuesday, Sept. 5 from 9 am to noon as an opportunity to introduce your incoming kindergarteners to Lawton. It also allows teachers to see how best to create successful classroom groupings.

Families will drop off their student at Lawton Elementary at 9am and then can join Principal Dina Clagg in the cafeteria for a coffee chat.

Students will be assigned to one of three groups and will explore learning spaces and do activities with our Kindergarten teachers. Plan on returning at noon to pick up your student.

Families will also hear from their assigned teacher on the evening of September 5, and will have an opportunity to sign up for a Family Conference with their student’s teacher on September 6, 7, or 8.

The first day of school for Kindergarten students in Seattle Public Schools is Monday, September 11.

Welcome Back, Dolphins!

Your Lawton PTA would like to extend a very warm welcome to our newest DOLPHINS, as well as our seasoned Lawton families. We’re excited to ready, set, school, and look forward to connecting with our student, parent and teacher community this year!

START DATES

First day of school for 1st-5th Grade – Wednesday Sept. 5, 7:55 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.
No Early Release

First day of school for Kindergartners – Monday Sept. 11, 7:55 a.m. – 2:25 p.m.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Instead of asking parents and guardians to purchase their own school supplies, Lawton has elected to bulk purchase supplies for students. You will not need to shop for pencils and notebooks this year – YAY!

However, Lawton families will be asked to pay a school supply fee of $35 per student for school supplies. This fee can be paid using School Pay on the Source after September 5.

Information about this process will come home in the First Day Packets with students.

Families interested in a scholarship can request one by contacting Annette Godon at Lawton@seattleschools.org.

SCHOOL LUNCH

Breakfast and lunch is served each day in all Seattle schools. You can view the menus online and filter by school. School meals prices are $2.25 for elementary breakfast and $3.25 for elementary lunch.

SPS encourages all eligible families to submit a new application for free and reduced-price meals now. The application is available online or you can request a paper copy from the front office.

If not eligible, you can pay with a credit card online at PayPams, www.paypams.com. PayPams requires the Student’s ID number or meal account pin number (provided by the school) to create an account.

PayPams charges users $1.95 (per student) each time money is added to the online account.

Field Day Updates

Afternoon Volunteers Needed

Students will enjoy fun carnival and backyard games on the playground and upper field for 2 hours that day. This PTA event can only happen with LOTS fo help so please click here to volunteer  (registered/approved SPS volunteers only). You can also order your child a Lawton Field Day shirt to wear – each grade is encouraged to wear their assigned color for the day. They can wear a shirt from home or purchase a Field Day shirt by June 2:

Kindergarten order link – red
1st Grade order link – orange
2nd Grade order link – yellow
3rd Grade order link – lime green
4th Grade order link – light blue
5th Grade order link – deep royal

Please list your child’s name and grade if you choose free shipping to Lawton!  These colors will stay with your child throughout their time at Lawton. You may want to order up a size or two, so they can wear them for a few years (the color will stay the same through the years, for example kindergarten students this year are red and next year will stay red as first graders and beyond). Students are welcome to wear any shirt on field day – color assignments by grade just add to the fun!

Book Drive / Book Swap

  • Book Swap (used book donations) – Starts June 1st. The Book swap will start on June 1st and end on June 7th. Students may bring up to five used books to school to donate. They will be able to pick new books to take home with them and keep. Please send books starting June 1st.
